Complementary Active
Skin Peptides
Signal & Carrier Peptides
Targeted cellular signalling for firmer skin
Origin: Synthetic / Fermentation
How It Works
Peptides are short chains of amino acids (2–10 residues) that mimic signalling proteins in the skin. Signal peptides like palmitoyl pentapeptide-4 (Matrixyl) interact with fibroblast receptors to upregulate collagen, fibronectin, and hyaluronic acid production. Carrier peptides (e.g., copper tripeptide GHK-Cu) deliver trace minerals that serve as enzyme cofactors in collagen and elastin synthesis. Neurotransmitter-inhibiting peptides like acetyl hexapeptide-3 (Argireline) reduce repetitive muscle micro-contractions that deepen dynamic wrinkles. Unlike PDRN, peptides do not work via the adenosine receptor pathway — making them mechanistically complementary.
Clinical Evidence
Matrixyl (palmitoyl pentapeptide-4) has multiple peer-reviewed studies showing improvement in wrinkle depth and skin firmness, with one split-face RCT showing results comparable to low-dose retinol. Copper peptide GHK-Cu has consistent in vitro data on collagen and GAG synthesis, with supportive clinical evidence. Argireline has clinical data showing 30% reduction in eye wrinkle depth at 10% concentration. The evidence base for peptides is generally Moderate rather than High because fewer large-scale RCTs exist compared to retinol or vitamin C.
Matrixyl (Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4) Anti-Wrinkle Efficacy
2009Significant reduction in wrinkle volume and depth at 12 weeks vs placebo in a split-face RCT.
GHK-Cu and Collagen Synthesis in Human Fibroblasts
2012Copper tripeptide stimulates synthesis of collagen I, III, and dermatan sulfate in cultured dermal fibroblasts.
How to Use
Apply peptide serums in the PM routine, after water-based serums and before oils or creams. Peptides are compatible with most ingredients but can be destabilised by strong acids — avoid applying directly before or after high-concentration AHA/BHA exfoliants. Most peptide studies use 8–12 week assessment periods; results build gradually.
Best For
Fine lines and wrinkles, loss of firmness, aging skin, sensitive skin that cannot tolerate retinol
Cautions
Very well tolerated. Copper peptides should not be used with vitamin C (they can interfere with each other). Argireline is best used at or below 10% concentration.
