Hyaluronic Acid
Sodium Hyaluronate / Hyaluronic Acid
Multi-depth hydration, science-proven
Origin: Fermentation (Streptococcus zooepidemicus) / Biotechnology
How It Works
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a glycosaminoglycan naturally present in the skin's extracellular matrix. It holds up to 1000x its weight in water through hydrogen bonding. Topical HA works across multiple skin depths depending on molecular weight: high-molecular-weight HA (≥1000 kDa) forms a moisture-retaining film on the skin surface; medium-weight HA (100–1000 kDa) penetrates the upper epidermis; low-molecular-weight HA (< 50 kDa) and hydrolysed HA penetrate more deeply to hydrate the dermis directly. The best topical formulas use multiple molecular weights simultaneously. HA does not directly stimulate collagen production but creates an optimal hydrated environment for regenerative actives like PDRN to work more effectively.
Clinical Evidence
HA has the most extensive evidence base of any topical skincare ingredient. Hundreds of peer-reviewed studies confirm efficacy for skin hydration, elasticity improvement, and anti-aging. Injectable HA (dermal fillers, skin boosters) is the most clinically validated aesthetic treatment in existence. Topical multi-weight HA serums consistently outperform single-weight formulations in clinical hydration measures.
Efficacy of Topical Hyaluronic Acid of Different Molecular Weights
2011Multi-weight HA formulations show superior hydration depth and duration vs single molecular weight; low-MW HA penetrates to stratum granulosum.
How to Use
Apply HA serum to slightly damp skin — the ingredient needs ambient moisture to function. Pat onto face and neck; do not rub. Layer PDRN serum on top to synergise regenerative and hydration mechanisms. Always follow with a moisturiser to seal HA against transepidermal water loss. In dry climates or winter, HA can paradoxically draw moisture from the dermis rather than the air — always seal with an occlusive or emollient in dry conditions.
Best For
All skin types; dehydrated skin, fine lines, plumping, post-procedure recovery, a hydration base for other actives
Cautions
Exceptionally safe. Very rare contact sensitivity to fermentation-derived HA. In dry conditions, always use under a moisturiser to prevent reverse osmosis effect.
